Styling your bed like a pro.

Your bed is most likely the focal point for your bedroom.

There are a few key components to focus on when styling a bed, including layering and including lots of texture. When you begin the process of styling your bed it can be incredibly exciting and very easy to get distracted by too many amazing choices. We believe you should focus on three key elements throughout the process.

  1. The first, is to focus on the feeling you want to achieve in your bedroom. Do you want luxurious glamour, or a simple paired back minimalist feel? This will help determine the colours and products that you choose.

  2. The second, is to choose elements that will help create this feeling. For example if you want full on luxury, you will probably want lots of cushions, whereas the more simple paired back look may not involve any (yes - you heard me!) decor cushions. The fabric of the bed linen will also help create this look and feel, for example a velvet throw will exude luxury, while simple white linen is the epitome of minimalism.

  3. Thirdly, keep it simple. Don’t overload the bed and create a busy, overly cluttered scheme. This will be difficult to access and even worse impossible to make up each morning. At the end of the day you want your bedroom to be a place where you can relax and unwind, so surround yourself with enough to make this achievable in a daily basis.

The first element to consider when styling your bed is layering.

This is what makes you want to jump straight into the beds at beautiful hotels! You probably don’t just want to have one blanket and pillow, you want to start with a sheet, include a doona, and include one throw. This will help to begin the multi-dimensional feel of a space which is what gives an overarching feeling of luxury.

You will also want to include cushions, and the number of cushions is reflective of the style of your bedroom. Ultimately you want these to exemplify your style. Again, less is more for the more paired back feel, while multiple layering with colour pattern and texture can add a touch of luxurious glam. Don’t overlook the importance of pillows when styling, these are a key layering texture and can add value to your cushion positioning.

The all important question of positioning is very much a personal taste. For a classic look, we will lean towards a more symmetrical - same both sides - look, while often making both sides completely different will add a whole new dimension to the scheme.

Texture is always your friend when designing any space. Adding textured pieces to your bed is a beautifully simple way to give the space a well styled feeling.

If you include different textures in your space, the space will appear more personalised, more well thought out and it will enhance the multi-dimensional and luxurious feeling. We always recommend our clients choosing items they are drawn to. Remember that there are so many different styles of fabrics and including velvet, satin, leather, linen and cotton is powerful in elevating your bed. Styling your bed is a great opportunity to explore these different fabrics as well in an affordable way as cushions, blankets and throws are a cheaper option than new furniture pieces. They are also easily changeable throughout the seasons!
